Premier Giorgia Meloni has played down talk of Transport Minister Matteo Salvini returning to the interior ministry after he was cleared on Friday of breaking the law in his handling of asylum seekers when he interior ministry in a former government.
On Sunday League leader and Deputy Premier Salvini hinted he was like to return to his former post, saying that "dealing with security, the future, the peace and serenity of millions of Italians is something beautiful everyone could aspire to".
He added that his acquittal in the Open Arms trial, in which he faced kidnapping charges for not allowing 147 migrants to disembark from an NGO-run rescue ship as part of his closed-ports policy when he was interior minister five years ago, took away the 'alibi' for denying him the position.
On Sunday, however, Meloni said she was "happy" with the work current Interior Matteo Piantedosi was doing.
