The Italian Bishops Conference (CEI)
on Wednesday highlighted the urgent need for Christians to get
involved in the political life of Italy and of Europe.
Italian bishops stressed "the urgency of a renewed presence of
Christians in the political life of the country and of Europe -
as noted in the introduction by the president, Cardinal Matteo
Zuppi - showing appreciation for attempts made by groups and
single" people that, starting with the annual political event
for Italian Catholics, the Social Week of Trieste, "have
regained vigour", according to the final statement of CEI's
Permanent Episcopal Council issued on Wednesday.
Cardinal Matteo Zuppi on Monday had hailed efforts for a renewed
presence of Christians in Italian and European politics,
including through the Social Week of Trieste, opening a session
of the Permanent Episcopal Council.
"It is a sign that, in the face of rare participation in the
political and social life needs to be grasped, encouraged and
accompanied, in the awareness that the Gospel is not detached
from reality, but deals with the practicality of life.
"For this reason, according to the Bishops, it is fundamental to
create and revitalize places of socio-political education,
helping promote dialogue without giving in to polarization and
to fruitless contrast", concluded the statement.
