Molise Governor Francesco Roberti is
being probed on corruption charges as part of an investigation
carried out by DDA anti-mafia investigators in Campobasso
involving a total of 45 people and two companies, Roberti
confirmed on Wednesday.
Roberti, a member of the centre-right Forza Italia (FI) party,
has been notified that the investigation against him and the
other suspects has been completed.
The governor's wife is also being probed, investigative sources
said.
The investigation concerns alleged waste dumping and involves
Molise as well as the Puglia region, the sources said.
According to Rome daily La Repubblica, which first reported
about the probe, Roberti and his wife are being investigated in
connection with public contracts.
According to Campobasso State Attorneys, between 2020 and 2023,
when Roberti was president of Campobasso's province, which is in
charge of authorizations regarding waste dumping, as well as a
an administrator of local industrial consortium Energia Pulita
and mayor of Termoli, he allegedly accepted money for himself
and his wife in exchange for favours he granted to the the
company Energia Pulita.
The charges against the 45 people and two companies probed
include extortion, illicit waste dumping and auction rigging.
Part of the investigation, which does not involve Roberti,
looked into alleged business connections between crime
syndicates in Puglia and Molise between 2019 and 2021.
