Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister
Antonio Tajani on Thursday said diplomacy was key to protect the
interests of European and Italian companies from new tariffs
imposed by US President Donald Trump, expressing confidence in
European Commissioner for trade, Maros Sefcovic.
"We must solve everything through diplomacy", Tajani told State
broadcaster RaiTre's Agorà program.
"I have great consideration for European Commissioner Sefcovic.
He is "a person with common sense, he knows how to negotiate and
safeguard the interests of European and Italian companies", he
noted.
"A trade war is not convenient for anyone", Tajani said.
And on Wednesday night Premier Giorgia Meloni said agriculture
should be protected from tariffs through diplomacy, during a
visit to the 'Agricoltura È' event in Rome to promote
agriculture.
Asked how to safeguard a sector that could be at risk under new
tariffs, the prime minister responded: "with diplomacy".
Meloni on Thursday is set to take part in the Summit on Peace
and Security of Ukraine convened by French President Emmanuel
Macron in the French capital and featuring the so-called
coalition of the willing.
