To mark Expo 2025 Osaka, the Association for Industrial Design (ADI) is presenting the Compasso d'Oro International Award in partnership with the Italy Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka.
The announcement was made at an award ceremony in Milan for the 28th edition of the Compasso d'Oro prize.
'Designing Future Society for our Lives' is the theme of the 2025 edition of the international exhibition which will run from April 13 to October 13, 2025.
Following the theme, ADI is presenting the global version of the top award of Made in Italy design which - with a five-member jury - will give a prize to the most innovative projects related to Expo's general themes.
An exhibition of the awarded projects will be inaugurated on September 5, 2025, at the Italy Pavilion, planned by architect Mario Cucinella, who reinterpreted the Ideal City of Renaissance.
The Italy Pavilion's theme is 'Art regenerates life', an interpretation of the general theme of Expo 2025 Osaka: Designing future society for our lives.
The general theme of the Compasso d'Oro International Award, inspired by Expo's idea, is divided into three sub-themes that will have to inspire the project proposals.
They are: 'Saving Lives: protecting and saving the lives of individuals'; 'Empowering Lives: enriching people's lives and expanding their potential'; 'Connecting Lives: individual lives connect to build communities and enrich society'.
"We are very proud of this partnership with ADI which represents the entire chain of Italian design", stressed the Deputy Commissioner General for Italy at Expo 2025 Osaka, Elena Sgarbi.
"It is an exceptional partner for us because we have decided to make design, the pride of Made in Italy, the common thread of the representation of Italy that we want to bring to Expo Osaka 2025.
"An Italy that is able to unite history, or the past, with the future, innovation and tradition, haute craftsmanship and the industrial element, creativity and technological ability.
"Nothing better than design, in fact, succeeds in conveying this whole message in a clear way", she continued.
"Design is a universal language, which can be understood by all, thus it is a very effective tool of communication with an immediate and strong impact", she noted.
"Since 2014, we have imagined an international and thematic edition of the prize dedicated to major events, Expo Osaka 2025 is certainly an extraordinary planetary event and the partnership with the Italy Pavilion gives us pride", stressed ADI President Luciano Galimberti.
"ADI wants to have a double role in this international edition of the Compasso d'Oro.
"The objective is sharing the method and values of Made in Italy with the world, while creating an occasion for debate, thanks to the partnership with the Italy Pavilion", explained Galimberti.
"Design is a central element of Made in Italy, one of our excellencies recognized around the world", stressed the Commissioner General for Italy at Expo 2025, Ambassador Mario Vattani.
"We are proud to cooperate with ADI in the creation of a special edition of the Compasso d'Oro International Award aimed at all countries taking part in Expo.
"Italy thus becomes the centre of a universal language of brilliance and creativity based on Italian savoir faire", said Vattani.
Candidatures for the Compasso d'Oro International Award can be presented on the website dedicated to the competition (www.compassodorointernational.com) as of September, 2024.
