Italian movie icon Sophia Loren on Friday is celebrating her 90th birthday with an event organized at the Space Cinema Moderno in her native Rome promoted by the culture ministry, Cinecittà and Archivio Luce, to be followed by an exclusive party with 150 family, friends and colleagues on the terrace of the Hotel Anantara Palazzo Naiadi overlooking the Baths of Diocletian.
One of Italy's most beloved actresses, Loren will be wearing a gown designed by her friend Giorgio Armani to receive a prize for her career from Culture Undersecretary Lucia Borgonzoni and Chiara Sbarigia, the president of Cinecittà, which is organizing a series of initiatives to celebrate Loren's 90th birthday.
These include an exhibit at the Lincoln Centre in New York and an homage to be paid to the actress by the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles in November.
During her acting career, Loren played with some of the greatest actors of the 20th century, including Clark Gable, Cary Grant and Marlon Brando as well as with another Italian icon, Marcello Mastroianni, her-favourite co-star who died in 1996.
With Mastroianni, Loren starred in the 1977 period drama A Special Day directed by Ettore Scola and in Vittorio De Sica's 1964 movie Marriage Italian Style Italian State broadcaster RAI has also planned reruns of her films, including the restored version of De Sica's famous film to mark Loren's birthday.
The actress, who was married to late film producer Carlo Ponti, last appeared in a movie in 2020, The Life Ahead, directed by son Edoardo Ponti.
