italian Permanent Representative to NATO Marco Peronaci hosted an event at Villa Manlio Brosio to introduce the new Chairman of the Atlantic Alliance Military Committee, Admiral Cavo Dragone, to the diplomatic community in Brussels.
It was the first public outing for the former Chief of Defence Staff in his new role as Rutte's chief advisor on military matters, which he took over on 17 January. "Even in 2025, NATO remains an inescapable actor for collective security," said Ambassador Peronaci, according to whom there are three priorities for the Alliance in the new year. "We must finally achieve a just and sustainable peace in Ukraine and relaunch cooperation with partners, particularly those on the southern flank." "We also need to strengthen the European pillar of NATO for the benefit of the entire Alliance," Peronaci added, in the presence of Italian Permanent Representative to the EU Vincenzo Celeste and EEAS Deputy Secretary General Charles Fries.
These themes were taken up by Cavo Dragone, who also emphasised the Italian role in the definition of the new NATO Action Plan for the South and the fundamental contribution to allied operations, such as Kfor. Among the many participants in the event were also the other two Italian NATO top representatives, Deputy Secretary General Carlo Maria Borghini and Special Representative for the Women, Peace and Security Agenda Irene Fellin, as well as the ambassadors of numerous partner countries, including Israel, Egypt, Japan, Tunisia, Serbia, Australia and Algeria.
