President Sergio Mattarella told his
Israeli counterpart Isaac Herzog that Israel has Italy's support
after the October 7 attacks by Hamas during their meeting in
Rome on Wednesday, while also stressing that the Palestinian
people need a future to look forward too, sources said.
"We are close to Israel in these sad days in which the pain for
the unacceptable and inhumane massacre of October 7th is
worsening with the return of the bodies of the hostages,"
Mattarella said, according to the sources.
"We defend Israel's right to security.
"While it is true that there is no peace without security, it is
also true that there can be no security without peace.
"To have real peace in the Middle East, we must ensure a
concrete future for the Palestinians, excluding Hamas
obviously".
