Eni said Tuesday it will help build
the first nuclear fusion plant in a spin-off project between the
Italian energy giant and the Massachussetts Institute of
Technology (MIT) in the early 2030s.
Eni plans to build the first industrial fusion power plant in
the early 1930s, the group's head of fusion, Francesca Ferrazza,
said at a hearing before the Senate Environment Committee.
Eni is participating in the Commonwealth Fusion System (CFS)
project in the US, a spinoff of MIT in Boston, using magnetic
confinement technology.
The Italian group plans to help build the first CFS-SPARC pilot
plant in the mid-1920s.
The first grid-connected industrial plant, CFS-ARC, is planned
for the early 1930s, and new fully functioning power plants in
the second half of the decade, said Ferrazza.
