Italian Bishops Conference (CEI) chief
Cardinal Matteo Zuppi said Wednesday there should be no more
migrant deaths at Italian borders and Italy should not build
walls but bridges for those wanting to come to Europe.
"The too many deaths warn us not to accept the old and new seeds
of hatred and prejudice. We do not want borders to be walls or,
worse, trenches, but hinges and bridges! ," said the archbishop
of Bologna and Ukraine peace envoy, speaking at opening ceremony
of the Social Week of Italian Catholics, in Trieste.
"We want this because this is the testament of those who have
lost their lives on the borders.
"We also want it for those who, at the price of terrible
suffering, have become migrants and ask to be considered what
they are: people!
"The Gospel helps us to understand that we are made for each
other, therefore with each other.
"Our common home requires a human and spiritually universal
heart."
