A newly married couple on Wednesday
appealed against the Vatican Bank for sacking them Tuesday after
it found out they had got married under new rules forbidding
married couples working together.
Their lawyer Laura Sgrò issued a statement saying: "the
undersigned defence attorney has challenged and contested the
act of immediate dismissal notified by the IOR to my clients,
considering it null, illegitimate and seriously damaging to
fundamental rights".
The Vatican Bank's name is the Institute for Religious Works,
IOR in Italian.
The IOR had previously said one out of of the newly married
couple, the bride or the groom, would have to resign in the
event of a wedding by staff members.
