The Israeli army said Friday its
forces had hit UNIFIL peacekeeping bases in Lebanon by mistake
in clashes with Islamist militant Hezbollah forces, saying the
militias were using civilian structures and the UN forces as
human shields.
The IDF said it had been notified that two Sri Lankan UNIFIL
peacekeepers were "inadvertently wounded during the army's
fighting against Hezbollah" in southern Lebanon.
The Israeli army voiced "deep concern over incidents of this
nature" after two Indonesian peacekeepers were hurt Thursday.
"The IDF takes every precaution to minimize harm to civilians
and peacekeepers.
"Given the complex and difficult operational environment in
which Hezbollah uses civilian structures and UNIFIL as shields,
the IDF will continue to make efforts to mitigate the risk of
such unfortunate incidents recurring", it added.
