US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stressing the importance of the U.S.-Italy alliance to the safety, security, and prosperity of the American people, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said.
"The Secretary and Foreign Minister Tajani discussed the importance of real burden sharing among all NATO Allies", Bruce explained in a note regarding the call which took place on Sunday evening Italian time.
"They also talked about ways to further the U.S.-Italy partnership through close collaboration on shared priorities around the world". Late on Sunday, Tajani wrote on X that he had had a "first, long and friendly phone conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio".
"Relations with the US are - together with Europe - the priority of our foreign policy".
Speaking about the phone call, Tajani said there had been "full strategic convergence on peace and reconstruction in Ukraine and in Gaza".
"We want to work together in Africa, Latin America and the Indo-Pacific to boost the West's unity", stressed Tajani.
Speaking about bilateral relations, the pair confirmed the "relationship of trust" and the commitment to "intensifying" commercial relations", wrote Tajani.
