Organised by the Università Politecnica delle Marche with the Danish Architecture Centre (Dac), in collaboration with the Italian Embassy in Copenhagen and the Italian Cultural Institute, a seminar entitled 'Coastal Landscapes: a heritage at risk. A comparative dialogue between Copenhagen and Marche Region', which proposed a comparison on the coastal defence systems of two very different areas, both at risk of flooding.
Looking at the protection of their respective coastlines, which are, for both countries, both distinctive features and important defences for the territory, Italy and Denmark together face the risk of changes in the sea regime and the variability of rainfall, as well as the greater impact this could have on the environment, which is, moreover, well illustrated by the now recurring phenomena of flooding.
What are the consequences of the rising sea level and the increasingly frequent risk of flooding on the urban and landscape heritage of the coasts of the Danish capital and the Marche Region? What are the future scenarios, what defence strategies? The experiences of the research units in the two contexts were compared in order to propose mitigation and adaptation measures, including renaturation, also soliciting the participation of local communities.
The Marche Region's commitment and support for the work and research of its university were effectively emphasised by councillor Stefano Aguzzi, who, in resuming regional motivations and projects, also introduced the Marche's important landscape, natural and historical heritage, whose richness and variety of places and routes is accompanied by a significant and appreciated capacity to welcome tourists, also supported by an outstanding wine and food offer.
Professors Antonello Alici and Maurizio Brocchini, from the Marche Polytechnic University, and Dr. Sbriscia with Dr. Gaia Galassi, from the Marche Region, presented the studies carried out so far and the forecasts, as well as the analyses and intervention plans that, put together, will be able to counteract the effects of climate and water regime changes in general. Well-known representatives from the Danish academic world and DAC participated with their own contributions to the meeting, which made it possible to weave an important connection between the different approaches to the issue and to combine significant potential for further joint developments on the subject.
As an expression of the country's university excellence, the development of advanced research and elaboration sectors at an international level at the Università Politecnica delle Marche confirmed the high potential of Italian-Danish collaboration in the sector and its ability to be a protagonist of important developments in topical subjects, in which Denmark is now showing a growing and strong interest.
