Saturday saw the second suicide in 12
hours in two Tuscan jails and 11 inmates plus one prison officer
have now taken their own lives in Italian penitentiaries since
the start of the year, warders union UILPA said.
A 39-year-old Romanian prisoner hanged himself in his bathroom
in Florence's Sollicciano Prison on Saturday morning after a
North African inmate fatally poisoned himself by inhaling
camping stove gas at a Prato jail Friday afternoon.
"The tragic number of inmates who have committed suicide in
Italy since the beginning of the year thus jumps to 11, 2 in
Sollicciano, to which one operator must be added" said Gennarino
De Fazio, general secretary of the UILPA penitentiary police
trade union.
