Centre-left opposition Democratic Party (PD) leader Elly Schlein on Tuesday called Premier Giorgia Meloni a coward and said she was fleeing from the Lower House where a no-confidence motion in Tourism Minister Daniela Santanchè was being debated.
The motion against Santanchè after she was recently indicted for alleged false accounting at her former Visibilia publishing company, is expected to be easily defeated. The minister has said she won't stand down but may do consider doing so if she is also indicted in another case seen as more serious, that of allegedly defrauding social security and pensions agency INPS over COVID redundancy funds.
"Meloni has been a world champion of requests for resignations and today she deserted this chamber, how can she not be ashamed of her inconsistency, how can she not realize how cowardly her attitude of constantly fleeing from this chamber and from reality is?," said Schlein.
"Where has the prime minister hidden? Maybe she is recording another video, a contribution to send to a convention among chainsaws and Nazi salutes".
